In honor of his exceptional contributions to high school athletics, Huntsville Sports Commission Executive Director Mark Russell was recognized as the 2022 State Official of The Year by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA). Russell is a distinguished football official with a commendable track record spanning over 26 years. This award demonstrates his unwavering dedication to upholding the most excellent standards of honesty, competence, and professionalism.
David Bell, AHSAA Football Coordinator of Officials, expressed his admiration for Russell’s esteemed contributions.
“Mark has proven to be one of the best football officials to ever work for the AHSAA,” he said. “He has worked to be the best and continues to mentor other officials throughout the state to help them reach their potential. Mark’s integrity and commitment to excellence is a great example to every official in our state.”
Amidst an ongoing shortage of officials, Russell’s dedication to officiating is a beacon of hope. The need for more officials has become a concern in recent years, directly impacting high school football and other sports. Individuals interested in becoming an official are encouraged to visit https://www.ahsaa.com/Officials/Officials-Home for more information.
The Huntsville Sports Commission congratulates Russell for his exceptional officiating contributions, exemplary mentorship, and indelible impact on the sport. You can catch Russell in action as he takes the field to officiate the much-anticipated football game between Grissom High School and Hazel Green High School this Friday, September 1, at Joe Davis Stadium. Friday night’s game will mark the first high school football game in the newly renovated stadium.
